#Music ~ …was my first love !!

Since I so shamefully forgot to mention #music in my interests last week I dedicate this first post to it.

History
With my mum being a music lover ever since and my dad being a drummer in a band in his early 20s (long blonde hair and all !!) it seems I inherited their love for tunes – and maybe their combined genes set me up with something even stronger. There was always music on in our house and early on I started translating the mostly English lyrics into German to really ‘get’ what the songs were about.

Genres
I’m not into a certain type of music. Though I mostly prefer pop, I also listen to rock, country, R&B and the occasional German Schlager *shock*

Mood
The music I listen to depends on the mood I am in – or rather vice versa ? Like nothing else music manages to change my mood in seconds… it can be saddening, joyous, encouraging, calming, enthralling and so much more…
I mean, how can you not want to dig your toes in the sand when listening to

Stories
Songs can put amazing stories into 3-5 minutes. ‘Love making, heart breaking, soul shaking’ stories. Well, mostly… sometimes the weirdest lyrics accompany great songs, tehe…

Singing
Yes, my music listening leads to singing… in the car… VERY loud !! Too bad when I drive around in my convertible in summer and people actually have to endure my so-called singing live. Kudos also to my dear hubby who, when stuck in the car with me, mostly just adjusts the volume UP so he cannot hear me anymore…

What’s your history with music ?? What kind of music do you listen to ?? Or don’t you care about music at all ?? Any fun stories to share ?? Share away…

For now I say

  1. When I was little I listened to Barry Manillow, The Letterman and the Carpenters because the were my sister’s favorite band. My sister had a crush on Barry Manilow and I had a HUGE crush on Shaun Cassidy. As I grew older the 80s music came along and my next crushes were Jon Bon Jovi of Bon Jovi and Jimi Jamison of Survivor.

My cousins and I have gone to many concerts over the years. The best concert of my life was the Kiss Reunion concert. We had 5th row seats and the music, lighting and pyrotechnics were unbelievable. My ears rang for days after the concert because the music was so loud. My cousins and I have seen Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, the Smashing Pumpkins, The Killers, Survivor, Huey Lewis, Duran Duran and Pearl Jam multiple times. The furthest we have traveled for a concert is to New York in 1999 to see Pearl Jam at Madison Square Garden.

I was lucky enough many years ago to meet Jimi Jamison who is my favorite musician. I was so shy I could barely talk to him. Over the years I attended many of Jimi’s shows, got over my shyness and had more opportunities to speak with him and the band. I often spoke with his bass player, Jeff, who would always sneak me in backstage after the shows to hang out with them. Jeff found out how much I loved photography so he introduced me to Marc who was a professional photographer for the band. Marc reviewed my pictures of Jimi and gave me some feedback which has greatly improved my photography. Unfortunately, Jimi passed away in September of 2014. I miss his voice and his incredible performances on stage. He was a true entertainer.

  2. No room in the house without a radio…I guess that about explains it. There’s hardly any minute a day – except while sleeping – without music.

What’s playing? Generally I’m more a rock and alternative girl but depending on my mood there’s a chance for everything…and during the carnival season it’s even “Schlager” 😉

I love dancing to Latin tunes (especially the Salsa) which hubby and I did with a group on stage for some years.

I also cherish live music, so visiting concerts -no matter if well known or local newcomer bands- happens quite frequently. We established a habit to combine concerts with City Trips – Last was Pearl Jam in Stockholm in 2014…couldn’t see Foo Fighters in 2015 in St. Gallen as Dave Grohl had broken his leg…don’t know yet, what this year will bring…

And when it comes to singing…I do it loudly but mostly out of tune…thankfully my car is no convertible 😉
